Tree Squirrels common name reflects that these squirrels are found only in areas where there are trees, because trees are where they build their nests, avoid most predators, and often harvest food. They frequently enter attics and become pests, and outdoors they can cause considerable damage to electrical and telephone cables.
Prevention: The key to controlling tree squirrels is pest identification, exclusion/squirrel-proofing the structure, and trapping out any resident squirrels. A thorough inspection, beginning about an hour before sunrise to mid-morning or beginning about an hour before sunset and into early evening, is required to observe activity patterns. Inspect to confirm and/or find the entry points where activity was observed and to locate other potential entry points. They have been known to tunnel and nest in/under blown-in fiberglass insulation between attic floor joists. Knowing the entry point(s) makes it easier to locate any nests. Exclusion must be thorough.
